Richie Barlow is a published author, a child abuse survivor, a multi award-winning business owner, and was named as an under 42 to watch by Yorkshire Insider magazine.

Listen to Alex Cann chatting to Richie about his experience in care.

The 39-year-old's harrowing experience in the British care system, that he vowed to never let beat or break him, is documented in his memoirs 'Richie - Who Cares?' (Lost Childhood and a Boy's Journey for Justice) will be released in the late summer of 2022. The book is ghostwritten by Becky Bond (Yorkshire Post/BBC Radio Leeds) and Published by Scratching Shed Publishing Ltd.

The emotional and powerful story is based on true events throughout Richie's life. The writing is hard hitting with graphic descriptions detailing what he endured as a boy who was left to fend for himself. He was outed as gay from a very young age, he was repeatedly abused and trafficked for sex as a child and let down by those who were supposed to protect and care for him.

Richie recalls at 9 years old, he made a promise to himself to get back up every time he was knocked down, to remain positive, and to ultimately survive and become the man he always dreamed of. A man who can find the strength to share his story to help others. His story is one of bravery, hope and survival and one that will leave a mark on your soul.

As a boy, Richie had hoped he could make it to the age of 22, that would have been a great achievement and one he would be happy with. Little did he know then, that before his 40th birthday he would have a successful and award-winning Dog Walking Business, be an accomplished author, be having conversations with his heroes such as Alison Moyet and others who helped him cope and survive thanks to the music and creativity they provided to help him find escapism in a dark world. Richie is now living in Teesside and happily married to husband Benjamin Barlow.

Richie Barlow is that special someone that we all want to know and have in our lives. We are honoured to call Richie a friend and look forward to working with him. He's a glass half full sort of person, someone who adds a richness to your life. Richie Barlow is an inspiration to us all.
